I can't practice yoga. I'm not good at it. I can’t touch my toes. I’m just not flexible.
That's why you come to yoga! One of the benefits of yoga is flexibility however; it has nothing to do with being able to touch your toes. It's what you learn on the way down. Yoga is designed to keep both your mind and body healthy at your own pace.
What should I bring to class?
Bring your own Yoga Mat. We have a couple for community use if needed. We also have props to share, but if you are more comfortable using your own, feel free to bring them. We recommend a blanket for cushion or yoga blocks and a strap to aid in poses. You may also want to bring water to hydrate and a hand towel if you tend to sweat a lot.
Can I eat before class?
You can have a light snack, but it is best to practice yoga on an empty stomach. Allow 1 hour to digest after a snack and 2-3 hours after a meal before practicing.
What should I wear?
Wear something comfortable and light weight. Bare feet are recommended.
Is Yoga a Religion?
Some people are concerned about yoga being a religion. They fear that by taking up the practice of Yoga, they might undermine their own religious faith. Are their fears warranted? Is Yoga a religion? The quick answer to both questions is: instead of undermining one’s personal faith, Yoga can actually deepen it. Yoga is not a religion! It is a way of living with health and peace of mind.
Can I do Yoga if I am pregnant?
Yes! Yoga is a great way for you to increase your energy and stamina. Try a prenatal yoga class or be sure to tell your yoga instructor that you are pregnant so that he/she can keep you safe and healthy. Also, yoga will help with concentration and endurance during labor and delivery.
Is it ok to practice yoga with a bad back?
It’s ok. Yoga will strengthen your back and stretch your spine. However, first check with your doctor to be sure that it is ok for you to practice - to be sure that it is not nerve pain or bulging disk pain. Rule of thumb - if it hurts, STOP!
I feel dizzy or nauseous after practicing yoga.
It happens. The asana practice is detoxifying. Try a protein shake or healthy snack before class. Drink water. Talk to your instructor if this continues.
